Sam has spent the last 14 years exploring the heart and soul of the Arabic music world. As Features & Music producer/presenter for BBC World Service, he is responsible for the Arabic Service's output of Arabic, Western and World music, weaved together in his popular and long running weekly show "The Jukebox". His “Arabic Jukebox” CD compilation was released around the world (EMI) in March 2004, with “Part 2” due to be released in 2005. Born in Lebanon and raised on the hauntingly beautiful voice of legendary diva Fairuz, he discovered world music after living in the US in the early 80's and Cyprus in the late 80's, before finally settling down in the UK in 1990 and joining the BBC. He has since produced/presented several series for Radios 3, 4 and World Service, including “Cairo Nights”, “Music For Every Millennium” and “Music Sinbad”.

As with many series's, Volume 1 is the best.Only if you give this one 5 stars would it be worth getting the other two in the series.I feel that for the following 2 volumes, they ran out of 'fully arabic flavour' tunes, and they compiled and sold them purely because of the success of this one (which doesn't mean they're not good dance music.Just that they're not Arabic enough to justify the package and title).This one has more usage of the arabic scales.The other two aren't quite as distinctive.There's actually an anthology, but a "3 cd series" has no place putting out a "greatest hits" cd.That's just money-grabbing, especially considering that the best tracks (as far as 'Arabic flavouring' is concerned)are on this volume 1 cd anyway.If you buy the 'anthology', and you like it enough to buy all the 3 volume series, it means you bought the 'anthology' for nothing.

CD2 is ‘Rebels’ so we get Khaled, Cheb Mami amongst 11 tracks with my
pick here going to Rasto and a deep mix of rai & reggae.
CD3 is ‘Pop & Beyond and includes tracks from Hanino, Kadim Al Sahir
and Azzddine with the mighty Bill Laswell.
